Increased capacity at Arken Intermodal Terminal in the Port of Gothenburg

By rebuilding and streamlining the layout of the railway tracks at Arken Intermodal Terminal, new space for cargo handling has been created. The result is a significant increase in yard capacity.

Arken Intermodal Terminal is one of Sweden’s largest intermodal terminals and an important hub for transfers between rail, road and sea. Over time, cargo volumes in the area have increased, and capacity for certain flows has approached its limit. Yard space in particular has been a limiting factor.

“In a port, space is a limited resource. Capacity development is therefore not only about building bigger, but just as much about using the infrastructure and land we already have in a smarter way. In this case, five percent more space has given us almost twice the yard capacity,” says Carl Johan Andersson, Senior Logistics Developer at the Port of Gothenburg.

By rebuilding one of the through tracks at the terminal, approximately 4,000 square metres of highly sought-after yard space for trailers and other units has been freed up at Arken Intermodal Terminal.

“For us as terminal operator, this is primarily about gaining greater flexibility in day-to-day operations. When we can store more cargo at the terminal, it becomes easier to plan flows and manage peaks without having to move cargo unnecessarily. This makes operations more efficient and ultimately provides better and more reliable service to our customers,” says Emma Meltin, Bridge Manager Intermodal, Gothenburg RoRo Terminal.
